چکیده

The Europa Clipper is a NASA mission concept to study Europa, the ice-covered moon of Jupiter, though a series of fly-by observations of the Europan surface and subsurface from a spacecraft in Jovian orbit. One of the primary instruments in the strawman scientific payload is a multifrequency, multi-channel ice penetrating radar (IPR) system. The IPR will play a critical role in achieving the missions science objectives for Europa’s ice shell, which are to characterize the distribution of any shallow subsurface water, search for an ice-ocean interface and evaluate a spectrum of ice-ocean exchange hypotheses..

Direct Fusion Drive For Europa Exploration

Executive Summary Exploration of the Jovian system has garnered popularity and interest, as three of the four large Galilean satellites are suspected to contain sources of water [1]. Several missions to explore one of them, the moon Europa, have been proposed. Two of these are the NASA Europa Clipper mission and the NASA Europa lander mission. The Europa Clipper mission would place a spacecraft...

Radar-Sounding of Icy Mantles and Comets Using Natural Radio Noise

Radar-sounding of ice sheets on Earth yields crucial information on ice history and dynamics, including discoveries of subglacial lakes beneath 3-4 km of ice [1]. Mars Express and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) have now demonstrated the corresponding power of orbital radar sounding for planetary exploration, in particular by imaging structures within and beneath kilometers of Martian wat...

The Search for a Habitable Europa: Radar, Water and an Active Ice Shell

Future Europa exploration will seek to characterize the distribution of shallow subsurface water as well as to understand the formation of surface features through dynamic ice-shell processes. Radar sounding will be a critical tool for detecting these features, and should be of primary interest to the astrobiology community for understanding how and where life might arise on Europa. To develop ...

Science potential from a Europa lander.

The prospect of a future soft landing on the surface of Europa is enticing, as it would create science opportunities that could not be achieved through flyby or orbital remote sensing, with direct relevance to Europa's potential habitability. Here, we summarize the science of a Europa lander concept, as developed by our NASA-commissioned Science Definition Team. The science concept concentrates...

Airborne and spaceborne ice sounding of Antarctica, Mars and Europa

Satellite-based radio echo sounding technique is of interest to the Earth science community over Antarctica and Greenland, as well as to the planetary science community for exploring subsurface structures of Mars and Europa. Pioneered by the Mars exploration community using MARSIS radar on board the Mars Express mission, such a technique has demonstrated ice sounding capability down to a few ki...
